Magnets Adhering to Stainless Steel Appliances
Sometimes magnets do not "stick" to the front of some refrigerator. This explains why.
It’s usually a matter of surface compatibility, not a defective magnet. Many “stainless steel–look” appliances are actually painted metal (magnetic), while a number of true stainless steel appliances are non-magnetic due to nickel content in the alloy.
What This Means for Your Fridge
-
Front panel may be non-magnetic: Many stainless models use alloys that don’t hold magnets.
-
Sides are often magnetic: Even when the door isn’t, the sides are frequently painted steel and will hold magnets.
-
Coatings matter: Some doors have clear coats or finishes that reduce magnet adhesion.
Quick Test (Do This First)
-
Grab any household magnet.
-
Test the exact spot on your fridge door where you plan to place the magnet.
-
If it doesn’t stick, try the side panel or another known steel surface (e.g., a filing cabinet).
Before You Order a Promotional Magnet
-
Tip: Test your refrigerator with a household magnet to confirm compatibility. If it sticks, your Markful magnet will, too. If not, the surface likely isn’t magnetic stainless (or has a non-magnetic coating).
Good to Know
-
A magnet that won’t stick to your fridge isn’t defective—the appliance surface is the variable.
-
If your fridge door won’t hold magnets, consider placing them on the fridge side, a metal board, or other steel surfaces around your workspace.
