Sizes and Usage Recommendations- Signs
This article provides information on sign and frame compatibility
Choosing the right combo comes down to three things: material, size/orientation, and grommet holes.
Material → Hardware Basics
-
H-stakes: Corrugated Plastic (4mm) only. The stake tines slide into the corrugation; other materials won’t work.
-
Not recommended for hanging signs. Corrugated panels can flex/tear at grommets when suspended.
-
-
Metal frames / posts (colonial, cross-arm, A-frame holders, angle-iron stakes): Use Polycomb, Aluminum Composite, or Reflective Aluminum Composite as long as the panel size/orientation matches the frame and the required grommet holes are present.
When You Need Grommet Holes
-
Required for: Colonial posts, cross-arm posts, A-frame holders, and angle-iron stakes (these hang the panel from hardware).
-
Not required for: H-stakes (corrugated plastic) and slip-in frames that capture the panel edges.
-
Typical placement (unless your hardware specifies otherwise): Top grommets 16" on center; add top & bottom if you’re linking a rider or need extra stability.
Size & Orientation Must Match
-
Your panel width/height and portrait/landscape orientation must match the frame or post system you’re using. If the hole spacing or panel size is off, it won’t hang flat.
Quick Size Guide (Common Markful Hardware)
-
Colonial Post: Fits panels up to 30" L × 24" W (max panel outside dimensions).
-
52" Cross-Arm Post: Fits panels up to 24" × 24".
Tip: If you’re close to the max, choose top & bottom grommets for stability outdoors.
Durability Notes
-
Corrugated Plastic (4mm): Best for temporary use (open houses, short-term promos). Not meant for long-term exposure to sun/wind/rain and not recommended for hanging applications.
-
Polycomb / Aluminum Composite / Reflective Aluminum Composite: Better for longer-term outdoor use and any hanging setup.
Fast Compatibility Matrix
-
Corrugated Plastic (4mm): H-stakes ✅ | Hanging hardware (colonial/cross-arm/A-frame/angle-iron) ❌ not recommended
-
Polycomb (3mm): Slip-in frames ✅ | Hanging hardware ✅ (with grommets)
-
Aluminum Composite (3mm): Slip-in frames ✅ | Hanging hardware ✅ (with grommets)
-
Reflective Aluminum Composite (3mm): Same as Aluminum Composite ✅
