Car Magnet Use, Care and Maintenance

How to care for your Car Magnet (and your car)

Markful car magnets are built for outdoor use with all-weather material and a premium UV gloss. Actual lifespan depends on climate, sun exposure, and care—most magnets last around a year with moderate to heavy use, and longer with proper maintenance.

Preparation (Before First Use)

  • Clean surfaces: Wash and dry both the back of the magnet and the vehicle panel with mild detergent and a soft cloth.

  • Cured finishes only: Ensure paints/clear coats/waxes are fully cured: paint ~90 days, clear coat ~60 days, wax ~2 days.

  • Dry completely: Both surfaces must be completely dry before application.

Application

Before You Install

  • Temperature: Magnet should be 60°F (16°C) or warmer at install.

  • Flat, not curled: Do not install a magnet that’s curled magnet side out—it can lift at the corners and trap air.

Installation Steps

  1. Choose a smooth, flat or gently curved steel area (avoid body lines, plastic trim, decals).

  2. Place the magnet and press from center outward to remove air pockets—no air gaps.

  3. Need to reposition? Lift from the sides, remove fully, and reapply. Do not drag the magnet across the paint.

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Weekly check: Remove the magnet every 7–10 days (more often in rain/snow or dusty areas).

  • Wash & dry: Clean both the magnet back and vehicle panel with mild detergent; dry with a soft cloth.

  • After storms/washes: Remove, clean, and reapply once the surface is fully dry.

Storage

  • Keep in a clean, dry place.

  • Store flat (stack face-to-face with print sides up), or roll with the printed side out; do not roll magnet side out.

  • Avoid heavy objects on top that could dent or imprint the surface.

Cautions & Warnings

  • Heat/cold limits: Do not use on surfaces that reach >160°F (71°C) or <-15°F (-26°C); avoid horizontal sun-exposed surfaces (e.g., hoods).

  • Non-steel panels: Magnets do not adhere to aluminum, plastic, fiberglass, or body filler. Test with a household magnet first.

  • Fresh finishes: Do not apply to fresh paint/clear coat/wax until cured (see timelines above).

  • Finish variation: Long-term use can cause uneven UV fading (area under magnet is shielded).

  • Handle in cold weather with care—magnets can be more brittle.

Quick Fit Check

  • If a household magnet sticks to the intended spot, your Markful magnet will too. If it doesn’t, that panel isn’t steel and won’t hold a magnet.
